Concertina Book

I have decided to make a concertina book because I wanted to experiment with handmade book making. I also wish for my final product to be a photo book so it will be interesting to see how my images work together at this stage. I have chosen to use 6 images from my shoot in Stone, documenting the memorial statues on Remembrance Sunday. I have chosen to use images from this shoot because there is a clear colour pattern throughout. Red is very heavily associated with remembrance and poppies, so it is the reoccurring theme throughout my images. A concertina book is also quite contemporary and I wanted to make sure the images I chose suited this.
Firstly, I cropped my 6 images to 4x4 and used a photoshop template to put my images into. I then printed this file onto card paper as I wanted the book to be a bit more sturdy than if I was to use regular printing paper. I then started my assembling process. I scored lines in between my images and then used a paper cutter on the lines to ensure I made straight cuts. After a lot of folding, cutting and double sided tape, my concertina book was finally complete.

This was a very therapeutic process and I enjoyed being a lot more hands on in the making of my book. This was my first attempt at making a concertina book but I was very happy with the final product. I wish to make more in the future as my working images folder grows and I do more shoots that are relevant to my project. I have made photo books in the past using the software InDesign then sending it off to get printed. In the future I wish to make a combination of both concertina books and printed books as they both produce very different end products. Because I want to incorporate text into my final photo book, the concertina book isn't the most practical in doing so. However, when I want the images to be the main focus or where the images may speak for themselves, I will definitely consider making a concertina book.
